Known Faces uses advanced intelligence to help you get personalised alerts when your camera recognises people you know. For example, instead of getting the alert "Person at Front Door" you'll get "Chris at Front Door." Your camera learns to recognise friends, family, and frequent visitors over time. You can turn alerts on or off for each Known Face, allowing you to focus on what matters.
Setting up Known Faces
Known Faces is off by default. You can turn on the feature at any time for each of your supported Blink devices.
Important: Known Faces uses facial recognition to identify people. It is recommended to notify people you choose to save as Known Faces. Some laws also require you to get explicit consent from people visiting your location before turning on this feature. Please make sure to check these laws before turning on the feature.
To turn on Known Faces:
- In the Blink app, tap Settings.
- Tap Known Faces or Blink ai features.
- Toggle on Known Faces.
- Supported devices are toggled on by default. You can leave them all active, or choose to include only certain cameras. If you haven't already added your location, you may be prompted to add it.
- To complete the setup, tap Continue.
Notes: If you add a new device or reset a device, you must turn on Known Faces separately for that camera.
Naming profiles
With Known Faces turned on, when a person comes within range of your camera and their face is clearly visible, they are automatically detected and added to your Known Faces library as an unnamed profile. You can then name them to create a Known Face profile.
To name a profile:
- In the Blink app, tap Settings.
- Tap Known Faces or Blink ai features.
- Under "Known Faces," tap Manage People.
- Select an unnamed profile.
- Tap Name this person.
- Enter a name (2-25 characters), and tap Save.
You can also name people directly from a clip in your clip list by selecting Name this person when viewing an event with a detected face.
Note: Profile names must be unique. Duplicate names (including variations in capitalisation) are not allowed. You can rename profiles at any time.
Deleting profiles
You can delete any profile from your library at any time. If you've reached the 50-profile limit, deleting existing profiles will free up space for new faces. Important: Once a profile is deleted, it cannot be recovered.
To delete a profile:
- In the Blink app, tap Settings.
- Tap Known Faces or Blink ai features.
- Under "Known Faces," tap Manage People. This will take you to your Known Faces library.
- Tap Edit, and select the profile(s) you want to delete.
- Tap Delete and confirm.
This permanently deletes the profile, facial recognition information, and all images being used for recognition. It does not delete your video recordings. Past events previously labelled with that person's name will show as "Person" instead. Future events with that person will not show their name.
Merging profiles
To merge duplicate profiles of the same person from your library:
- In the Blink app, tap Settings.
- Tap Known Faces or Blink ai features.
- Under "Known Faces," tap Manage People. This will take you to your Known Faces library.
- Select the unnamed or duplicate profile.
- Tap Name this person and begin typing their name.
- As you type, the app will show existing Known Faces profiles.
- Select the existing profile you want to merge with.
- The app will ask if they are the same person. Tap Yes, combine profiles.
All video event history from both profiles is preserved after merging.
Managing alerts for profiles
You can choose which Known Faces you want to be notified about, or turn off alerts for specific profiles to reduce notifications.
To manage Known Faces alerts:
- In the Blink app, tap Settings.
- Tap Known Faces or Blink ai features.
- Under "Known Faces," tap Manage People. This will take you to your Known Faces library.
- Tap the profile(s) you want to manage.
- Toggle Alerts on or off.
Alerts on: You get a personalised alert with the person's name. For example, "Chris at Front Door."
Alerts off: Your device does not send an alert for that person. The event is still saved in your clip list with the person's name.
Unrecognised person: You get a generic "Person at [device name]" alert.
Note: Facial recognition results might vary, and misidentification can occur. For maximum security and to ensure you don't miss important events, consider keeping alerts on for all people.
Filtering clips by Known Faces
You can filter your clip list to find recordings of specific people.
To filter clips with Known Faces:
- In the Blink app, tap Clips.
- In the bottom-right, tap the Filter
icon. - Tap Filter by People.
- Select the profiles to filter your recordings, and tap Continue.
- You can combine multiple filters to narrow your search. When ready, tap Apply Filters. The clip list will display recordings with the profiles you chose.
Known Faces library
- Profiles and facial recognition data are encrypted and stored in the cloud, not on your Blink devices.
- Your library supports up to 50 profiles (named and unnamed combined). When you reach 50 profiles, you will get the message: "Library Full: Delete existing profiles to add new ones."
- Unnamed profiles are automatically removed after 30 days if the person is not detected again.
- All profiles and facial recognition information are automatically deleted after 180 days of no recognition.
- When you reset or transfer a device, profiles and facial recognition information do not transfer with it.
- When you cancel your Blink ai plan:
- Your devices stop recognising people and you can't add new profiles.
- You can still view and delete existing profiles for 30 days.
- If you resubscribe within 30 days, recognition resumes with your existing profiles.
- After 30 days without a subscription, all unnamed profiles are deleted. Named profiles are deleted after 180 days.
Understanding recognition accuracy
Known Faces recognition might occasionally be inaccurate. Common reasons include:
- Camera resolution: If your camera resolution is set to 720p (Saver) or 1080p (Standard), Known Faces detection may be reduced. To improve accuracy, change your camera video quality settings to "Best."
- Distance from camera: Face recognition works best within 0.5-3 metres (1.5-10 ft). Recognition may be reduced at 3-4 metres and above.
- Partially covered faces: Face masks, sunglasses, helmets, or other accessories that block facial features.
- Poor lighting conditions: Low light or high contrast reduce performance. Daylight and IR night mode produce the best results.
- Movement patterns: People who move quickly or walk across the camera's view are harder to recognise. Recognition works best when people walk directly toward the camera.
- Camera obstructions: Fogged, dirty, or obstructed lenses can affect image quality.
FAQ
Why is Known Faces detection less accurate on my camera?
Known Faces works best with higher resolution cameras (2K and 4K) and when your camera's video quality setting is set to "Best." If your camera is set to 720p (Saver) or 1080p (Standard) resolution, there may be reduced accuracy. To help improve Known Faces performance, change your camera's video quality settings to "Best."
Known Faces accuracy can also be affected by distance from the camera (works best within 0.5-3 metres), partially covered faces, poor lighting, rapid movement, and obstructions blocking the camera.
Why am I getting a "Person" alert instead of a name?
This happens when the system cannot identify the person. It's usually due to distance, poor lighting, the face being partially covered, or the person moving too quickly.
Why is there a delay in my notifications?
When Known Faces is turned on, the system takes a brief moment to attempt face recognition before sending a notification. This helps provide you with a personalised alert rather than a generic one.
What happens if I turn off Known Faces?
Your profiles and data are preserved. Face recognition stops, but historical labels on past events remain. You can turn on the feature at any time without needing to re-enrol anyone.
If you leave Known Faces off:
- Unnamed profiles are automatically removed after 30 days.
- Named profiles are automatically deleted after 180 days.
How many people can Known Faces recognise in a single event?
Known Faces can recognise up to 5 people in a single event.
I've reached the 50-profile limit. What should I do?
You can delete profiles you no longer need from your Known Faces library to make room for new faces. You can delete both named and unnamed profiles. For step-by-step instructions, refer to "Deleting profiles" in this article.
What if I have privacy concerns about face recognition?
Known Faces is completely optional and turned off by default. You must turn on the feature before any facial recognition information is collected. You can turn off the feature and delete all profiles and facial recognition information at any time.
