If you need to change batteries, or view the QR code after you connect the back plate, use the opening key that was taped to the template, in the box.
Install choices for the Blink Video Doorbell
The Blink Video Doorbell uses two AA batteries for primary power in every setting. You can add a Blink Subscription Plan any time to receive cloud storage and other features.
Sync Module - When the doorbell is connected to a Sync Module system the batteries last up to two years and the doorbell is 'always awake' to receive commands at all times. A Sync Module 2 allows saving clips to Local Storage on your own USB drive without a subscription.
Wired - When the doorbell is connected to 16 - 24 volts AC wiring from a doorbell you already have, the Blink Video Doorbell is 'always awake' and able to receive commands at all times. This includes arming the system, starting Live View, taking thumbnail images, and updating settings. If the voltage is lower than 16 volts AC, you enter Event Response.
Event Response - With no Sync Module or wired connection, you are in "Event Response". To save batteries, Event Response puts the doorbell to sleep at 60 seconds, so you must press the doorbell button to wake it up and download any new settings, or to arm/disarm the system. For this reason, you cannot start doorbell actions from the Blink app, including Live View and taking a thumbnail.
How to install with a Sync Module
The best way to add the doorbell with Sync Module option, is to install the Sync Module first. That way, the Doorbell will be recognized and added more quickly.
Remember that the Sync Module must be close enough to the doorbell for full connectivity and the best experience. Make sure to set up the Sync Module near to where you will be mounting the doorbell, for the most reliable setup of both devices.
After installation, you can use the Blink app's signal strength indicator to help choose a location if you wish to move the Sync Module. Take note of the system name you create for the Sync Module.
How to add your Sync Module 2 to the Blink app
Make sure that you download the most recent version of the Blink mobile app and have an account set up. This video quickly walks you through the in-app setup of your Sync Module 2. For detailed instructions, see the step-by-step process below.
Add a Sync Module and create a system
1. From the home screen, tap the + icon to add a device.
2. The Add Device screen displays all of your device options and tap Sync Module.
3. Next, enter your Sync Module's serial number. Within the Blink app you can scan the QR code printed on the bottom of your device, or in the Quick Start Guide. You can also manually enter the serial number.
Note: The Blink app may require permission to access the camera on your mobile device in order to scan the QR code.
To learn where the QR code and serial number are located, tap Help me find my QR code and serial number at the bottom of the Scan QR Code screen.
4. Once the serial number is recognized, you are asked to create a new system by tapping the text entry box and providing a unique name. This name must be different from other system names you may have in your Blink account. Tap Continue after your new system name is entered.
5. The Add Sync Module screen will instruct you to plug in your Sync Module and then wait for the light pattern of blinking blue and steady green.
Tap Discover Device when you see this pattern on your Sync Module.
Note: If you don't see the blinking blue light pattern, then you may need to reset the Sync Module. Learn more about how to reset the Sync Module.
6. Next, the Blink app needs to connect to the Sync Module's Wi-Fi network. It's named “BLINK-" followed by four digits from the Sync Module serial number. Tap Join and then you are asked to join your local Wi-Fi network.
7. The Add Sync Module screen displays 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi networks within range. If you do not see your local Wi-Fi network, tap Refresh List at the bottom of the screen. The Sync Module stores network information for devices that are added to its system. Learn more about how to troubleshoot Wi-Fi connections.
8. After you tap your Wi-Fi network name, you will see a password entry field. It is important to ensure your password is correct before entering it. Then tap Join to continue.
9. You are then notified when your Sync Module has been added to your new system. Tap Done to complete the process and view the Welcome screen where you can add a new camera.
The new system name displays at the top of your Home screen and you will also see the Sync Module is added. A cloud icon shows a green connection line showing the Sync Module is communicating with the Blink servers. You can now tap the plus symbol + to add a device.
Next, add your doorbell to the Sync Module system you just created.

Scan the QR code of your new Doorbell
1. From the Home screen of the Blink app, tap the blue "Plus" sign + in the upper right corner of the screen to add your new doorbell.
2. In the Add Device screen that opens, tap Blink video doorbell.
If it is the first time you are using the Blink app, a popup (image below) asks for permission to use the camera to scan the QR code on the back of your doorbell. This is just a convenient way to enter the device serial number (DSN).
Tap OK to safely permit camera access, or tap Don't Allow and then enter the DSN manually.
The QR code and DSN are printed on a label inside the battery compartment.
3. If your doorbell is not open, insert the provided key and lift to separate the back plate slightly then push the doorbell toward the top of the back plate to release.
The metal key comes taped to the paper mounting template included in your doorbell packaging.
Make sure the QR code on the doorbell is in your camera view and in focus. Tap the flashlight icon to add more light if needed.
A green square appears when your phone camera 'understands' the QR code and you proceed to the next step.
Choose a system or create one
If you have already set up a Sync Module to use with the doorbell, choose that system, or create a new system for the doorbell to manage by itself.
Note: The Mini can act as a plug-in chime when it is on a system with a Blink Video Doorbell.
Sync Module Install
If a Sync Module is not detected, you are asked if you would like to install one now.
It is easiest to choose "Add without a Sync Module" and continue installing the doorbell, then add the Sync Module after.
If you choose to "Add a Sync Module", the doorbell serial number is forgotten, and QR code scanner opens for you to set up a Sync Module. When the Sync Module setup is complete, you end up at the home screen. To add your doorbell to the Sync Module system, tap the blue "Plus" sign + again to scan its QR code.
Power-up and Connect to the Doorbell's Wi-Fi

When complete, you are shown a success screen. Tap "Continue" to go to the Home screen.
Mounting the doorbell
You have the choice to install the doorbell connected to your own wiring. Batteries are always the main power source, even when the Blink Video Doorbell is connected to powered wiring from an existing doorbell system.
If you tap "Maybe Later", the mounting instructions are not presented, and the install process finishes with some introductory information.
If you wish to continue the mounting steps, choose if you will use existing powered wiring from a chime system.
How to mount without wiring
If you are mounting the Blink Video Doorbell in the place of your old doorbell button, but not using the wires, please use the provided wire caps to keep the wires from accidentally touching and activating the main chime or causing sparks.
Mounting is slightly different for each style of back plate, but they each use only two screws.

Prepare a location to mount the Blink Video Doorbell
Once you decide on proper placement, clean the surface well. The back plate needs to form a weather tight seal, so mounting on a flat sturdy surface is important.
To adjust the view 5º up-down, or 25º side-side, click to learn about installing a wedge or corner mount.
A paper template is included with your doorbell to show how far apart you drill the mounting holes. The template is shipped with the doorbell opening key attached. Save the key for future use. The same template also works for Wedge and Corner Mounts.
How do I mount on vinyl siding?
We recommend only using the included mounting kit. However, there are "screw-free" kits available to fit standard vinyl siding. Some good search terms are "surface block" and "vinyl siding wall plate".
To maintain a weather seal, both mounting holes must be covered if they are not being used. Waterproof tape is a recommended option. By design, the included mounting screws fill the space, keeping your doorbell weather resistant.

Should I install a Wedge or Corner Mount?
The wedge and corner mounts (included in some packages, or sold separately) can correct the doorbell view when the only available surface is angled, or you want to adjust the view.
- Wedge changes the view 5º up-down
- Corner Mount changes the view 25º side-side.
The camera in the doorbell has a field of view pointing straight out from the mounting surface. If the image does not capture the view you want, a Wedge offers 5° vertical tilt (up and down), and a Corner Mount offers 25° horizontal tilt (side to side). These accessories come in black or white to match your doorbell.

How do I use wall anchors?
The wall anchors are made of white plastic and are to be used when the threads of the screw cannot dig into the material, such as with brick. You drill a hole large enough for the wall anchor to fit tightly into, then when you use the mounting screw, it's threads can hold securely.
- Drill a 7/32-inch (5.41 mm) hole, 1 inch (2.5 cm) deep.
- Insert the wall anchor until it is flush with the mounting surface.
- Continue with the installation.
Tools
You will need tape to hold the template in place, a screwdriver, a drill, and the clear plastic pouch with screws and wall anchors. To drill mounting holes, select the bit size you need:
- Just the screws: 3/32-inch (2.375 mm)
- Wall anchor: 7/32-inch (5.41 mm)
Tape the paper template 40 - 48 inches (101.6 - 121.9 cm) above the floor.
Drill two guide-holes approximately one inch deep (2.5 cm).
For mounting on brick, stucco, or drywall-type materials, you may want to use the included white plastic wall anchors. Wall anchors grip the threads and provide outward pressure against the walls of a drilled hole. Included wall anchors fit the hole from a 7/32-inch (5.41 mm) drill bit.
Remove the paper template.
Secure exposed wires if necessary.
If you are not using existing wires, but they are present, twist a grey terminal cap onto each exposed wire tip to prevent dangerous sparking or other issues. Find two terminal caps in the accessory bag with the mounting screws.
Attach the back plate to your surface with two screws (do not over tighten)
All-purpose screws are included with two wall anchors and wire terminal end caps in a clear plastic pouch. Use only two screws to mount the back plate.
![]() |
Note: Mount the back plate on a firm, flat surface, to form a weather seal with the doorbell. We recommend only using the included mounting kit, but if you do not, the mounting holes must be covered with a watertight seal. |
Three hole back plate for weather resistant doorbell
The back plate with three holes is not designed to provide a seal from weather, because the Video Doorbell it comes with is rated IP-54 weather resistant. For best installation, we recommend using the top and bottom mounting holes on a flat surface.
For uneven or smaller surfaces, use the top and middle holes. Be careful not to over tighten the middle screw. If a gap appears between the back plate and the doorbell, loosen the middle screw slightly.

Mount the doorbell and power on
Note: If your back plate has pins, use caution when securing the doorbell.
- Align the top edge of your doorbell to the back plate.
- Push it firmly against the back plate until you hear and feel a slight click to confirm it is secure. The doorbell is now secure and can only be removed by inserting the pin tool at the bottom of it.
- Next, you turn the power back on and continue to follow the in-app instructions.
Note: If the power level is not compatible, your doorbell will default to Event Response mode. Tap Continue. - Next, you are asked to select whether you have a mechanical or digital chime. A mechanical chime makes sound by a physical hammer striking a metal bell or bar. A digital chime plays an electronic recording. If you are need help identifying your chime, tap I'm not sure which chime I have to learn about house chimes. Once identified, select your chime and tap Continue.
- When you make a chime selection, the Blink app will present a calibration screen that is appropriate. Learn more about chime calibration.
If the connection is successful, tap Done. Your Blink Video Doorbell is ready to be used.
If you have not connected a Sync Module, and you are not connected to wiring (or if your wiring provides less than 16 volts AC) you enter Event Response. Click the title below for more details.
Event Response
What is Event Response mode?
If your Blink Video Doorbell is not connected to a Sync Module 2 or is not connected to compatible chime wiring, the doorbell enters into Event Response mode.
When your Blink Video Doorbell is operating in Event Response mode, features such as Live View and two-way audio are only available for doorbell presses and when motion is detected.
Once a Sync Module 2 is added to the doorbell's system, or the doorbell is connected to compatible chime wiring, the doorbell automatically exits Event Response mode.
Using the Blink Video Doorbell with batteries
Your Blink Video Doorbell is powered by two AA lithium batteries. Adding your doorbell to a Sync Module 2 and/or connecting it to your existing chime's wires can extend battery life. However, batteries are the main source of power for the doorbell and are required for your Blink Video Doorbell to function. Battery performance is directly related to the amount of use.

1. Live View and two-way audio (with or without a Blink Subscription Plan)
While your Blink Video Doorbell is in Event Response mode, you can't access Live View from your Blink App. However, Live View and two-way audio are available when:
- Your Blink Video Doorbell ringer is pressed.
- Your system is Armed for Motion Detection and your Blink Video Doorbell detects motion.
Your mobile device will send you a push notification when either of these two events happen. Tap the notification within 60 seconds to enter a Live View session with two-way audio.
2. Viewing and saving clips
Note: An active Blink Subscription Plan is required to save motion clips (video). Saved motion clips from your doorbell appear in Clips with a bell icon next to the clip thumbnail.
Without a subscription, Live View and motion clips are not saved.
- While in Event Response mode, your Blink Video Doorbell displays clips as a Non Media Event in the thumbnail area. This indicates an event happened, but nothing can be watched.
3. Photo Capture
Note: To use Photo Capture while in Event Response mode, you must have an active Blink Subscription Plan and your doorbell must be armed. The Photo Capture setting for your Blink Video Doorbell is off by default.
- Photo Capture stores a photo every hour. If there are no doorbell presses or motion events, the photos are compressed into a short video that you can view in the Clips section of the app.
- When a doorbell press or motion event happens, any previous Photo Captures are converted to your clip list, so the new event can be processed right away. Each time Photo Capture stops, you receive a video of the images taken up to that point.
- Learn more about Photo Capture in the Photo Capture FAQ.
4. Photo Thumbnail
Note: An active Blink Subscription Plan is required for Photo Thumbnails.
- Photo thumbnails can't be generated directly within the app while the doorbell is in Event Response mode.
- If you don't have a Blink Subscription Plan, your Event Response mode Blink Video Doorbell will be gray while on the home screen.
- The thumbnail is updated each time the doorbell ringer button is pressed.
