The network environment
Blink devices use your 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network to communicate with the main servers. Some routers create a 5 GHz network that may be visible to your phone or tablet, but will not be visible to the Blink system.
Important: Blink devices communicate on port 443 – HTTP Secure (HTTPS). If you block port 443, your Blink system is not able to communicate.
The Sync Module creates a private Wi-Fi network to communicate with Blink devices. This network is named "Blink-" followed by last four digits of the device's serial number.
Sync Modules require all devices to show 3 bars of connectivity to the Sync Module and the Wi-Fi router. The Blink app displays connectivity strength in the settings screen of each device.
Sometimes, a device is set-up near the Sync Module and Wi-Fi router loses connectivity when placed in its final location. You should check the signal strengths from the Blink app after the device is placed. If needed, consider adding a range extender to the network.
For systems with Indoor (gen 1) and XT cameras, they can only connect to the same network that the Sync Module is connected to. For these cameras, the range extender must have the same network name (SSID) and password as the main Wi-Fi network. This is often called "repeater mode".
Some range extenders automatically add the characters "-ext" to the end of the main Wi-Fi network name.
Blink cameras from the XT2 onward, can connect to a network that is named the same as the main network with the additional characters of "-ext". For example, an XT2 camera can connect to a repeater network named "House-EXT" when its Sync Module was set up on the network named "House".
Powering your system
Blink battery powered cameras need size AA 1.5 volt Lithium non-rechargeable batteries to provide 3 volts of steady power. Lithium-Ion (Li-Ion), Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH), and Alkaline AA batteries will work for a short time, but then quickly fall below the 3 volt level. If you are experiencing short battery life, double check that the batteries are non-rechargeable Lithium.
A camera or device at the outer limit of your wireless network will use more battery power than one closer to the router because the device must work harder to transfer data.
The Sync Module requires power at all times. This is provided by a standard 5 volt 1 Amp USB source. The Sync Module is designed to regain network connections and communicate with the main Blink servers when it is unplugged and powered back on. There can be a startup delay if the Sync Module is downloading a firmware update. If your Sync Module seems unresponsive, check that the Sync Module uses the included power supply, or that the one you are using is 5 volts at 1 Amp. When the Sync Module is offline, it displays a red LED, and the Blink app displays "No Sync Module" as a banner and on the thumbnails of the affected camera.
Blink cameras have an effective motion detection system that must be tuned for your specific placement and size of object that you wish to be alerted for. Good camera placement is the most important part of tuning your camera sensitivity.
The XT2 and XT camera's Infrared detector is sensitive to heat differences, so any heat source in the viewing area could potentially trigger a motion alert. If your camera has a road in view, and passing cars reflect sunlight at certain times of the day, your camera will observe flashes of heat and motion. If your camera is viewing trees, and the sun is behind them, tree motion from wind could also be a trigger.
The Mini camera does not use Infrared to detect motion, it uses picture differences from moment to moment. Visible motion triggers the alert, even in night mode when the Infrared light is active.
Activity Zones - To help tune your camera, we have created Activity Zones so you can turn off motion detection in a small part of the camera view. Now you can block areas with random motion, like leaves blowing, and only receive motion alerts from the areas you want.
Sensitivity - Blink cameras have a Sensitivity setting for motion detection. Consider this as 'fine tuning' after you have taken care in camera placement and deselected any activity zones that might create unwanted alerts.
You will have the best experience if you place the camera looking at an area where you do not expect random motion. For instance, having the camera point to an entrance is more effective than having the camera point down the walkway from an entrance. The difference is that when pointing to the entrance, only motion at the door will trigger the motion alert. When pointing down the walkway, many possible triggers could send an alert that is not relevant.
Every motion alert will use some battery power, so it is a benefit to have just relevant alerts sent.
There are specific troubleshooting procedures that you can follow. Some situations require Technical Support to complete. For instance, if your Sync Module is showing only a steady blue LED, when you contact Technical Support the Agent will help you perform a firmware refresh.
